Procedures followed during an investigation

Here are listed the procedures followed by all Paranormal Investigations of Staten Island members. All the procedures hereafter mentioned are tried and tested methods proving to be the best known way to capture more accurate evidence. It is the practice and responsibility of PISI to provide our clients an honest and accurate conclusion that has been scientifically analyzed to its fullest.

Proceedures for capturing video/photograph evidence

Still Digital Video:

  • Our still video cameras are MiniDV cameras manufactured by Sony Corporation model number DCR-HC32

  • All equipment is to be tested for proper working order before any investigation is done.

  • Tripods are set on a smooth level surface and aimed in a manner so as to avoid light sources such as windows, mirrors, televisions, etc.

  • An electrical outlet may be requested to provide an unlimited power source for our cameras.

  • Additional infrared illuminators will be used to provide a better quality video in zero lux (no light) conditions.

  • Tapes will be changed in a timely fashion as well as any batteries checked.

  • No personal property of the client shall be disturbed by PISI members with out the consent and supervision of the owner.

  • All equipment will be set in such a position so as not to provide a safety hazard to our investigators or clients in any way.

  • Still video is used widely to provide a Steady "eye" on locations that have claimed activity, this is to provide the investigators the freedom to move about the location more freely and to investigate other areas of the site while having some recorded evidence on a alleged "hot spot".

Motion Video Recording:

  • Our mobile digital video camera is a MiniDV camera manufactured by Sony Corporation model number DCR-HC26

  • Equipment must be tested to be in proper working order prior to the investigation.

  • A qualified member of PISI will be holding the camera at all times and will be focused on not only the video recording but his/ her surrounding area so as not to cause damage to the site in any way.

  • The Side-LCD screen will be used to free up both eyes of the video tech holding the camera also providing a more assured method of area awareness.

  • Video will be uninterrupted deviod of faders, camera effects, and stop/ start cuts, this is to provide an easier analysis of the footage later without having to decern from afore mentioned anomalies so a more acurate conclusion can be agreed upon.

  • Video footage will not include Addresses, Names, and or faces of clients at anytime

  • The Camera tech should be aware of windows, reflective surfaces, light sources and/or anything else that would provide a false positive and otherwise corrupt our evidence (ie. camera flash).

Photograph Evidence:

  • Our still photography utilizes digital cameas manufactured by companies such as: Sony Corporation, Kodak, Cannon, Poloroid etc.

  • Equipment must be tested to be in proper working order prior to the investigation.

  • All photograph evidence taken MUST not include addresses, names and or faces of clients.

  • Photographers should be aware of the surrounding investigators, light sources, and reflective surfaces.

  • A minimum of 300 pictures should be taken over the course of a six hour investigation.

  • An announcement of coming flash should be made before any pictures where the surrounding investigators may be distracted or mislead by said flash, this should be announced again after a period of camera inactivity.

  • Photographs should be random in nature but also taken in situations where the photographer feels there may be a presence or where a fellow investigator has had an anomalous reading (Ie. a fluxtuation in temperature and or EMF <electromagnetic field>).

  • The photographer shall be cautious of all surroundings taking great care to not cause damage to the location and belongings of the client.

A copy of the original Photograph and or Video evidence is available on request by the client.

Procedures for collecting audio/ temperature and EMF evidence

Temperature recording

  • Temperature readings will be collected with a digital infrared thermometer produced by Craftsman.

  • A test will be conducted to ensure the proper working order of this equipment prior to the investigation.

  • A base ambient room temperature will be taken as a reference point to determine anomalous readings.

  • Investigators working with this equipment must be aware of any ventilation source or cooling devices so as to acurately record evidence.

  • All readings will be in faranheit degrees and marked in notation in the same format.

  • Readings of ten degrees or more colder than the ambient temperature must be recorded for consideration.

  • This equipment utilizes a laser pointer for accurate aiming this laser can be dangerous if directed towards the eyes of any surrounding investigators or clients, extreme caution will be exercised when using this device.

  • Temperature fluxuations although can annotate a paranormal occurance they alone are not conclusive evidence to provide infallable proof of a haunting.

Electromagnetic Field Recording:

  • All EMF readings will be collected by an EMF sensitive device measuring in gauss, currently we use three types of EMF meters: Single pole analogue manufactured by Dr. Gauss, Single pole digital manufactured by A.W. Sperry and a triple pole analogue manufactured by TriField.

  • A test will be conducted to ensure the proper working order of this equipment prior to the investigation.

  • A base reading will be taken of every room to be investigated to ensure a proper reading for analysis upon conclusion of the investigation.

  • All readings must be taken and evauated with extreme care all homes and buisnesses have electricity and eletronics that generate EMF and as such will cause fluxuations in our equipment. Care should be taken not to misread these fluxuations.

  • Knowledge of all fuse/ circuit panels should be made available to PISI prior to the investigation so as to make note of their location during the investigation.

  • Fluxuations 2.0 gauss and more above the base reading warrant further inspection, photograph and temperature readings.

  • EMF reading although can annotate a paranormal occurance they alone aren't sufficiant concrete evidence to conclude a haunting.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon Recording:

  • Our EVP recordings are currently recorded on digital voice recorders manufactured by Olympus, they are then uploaded onto a computer for noise reduction and filtering analysis done on programs manufatured by Audacity, Adobe,  etc.

  • A test will be conducted to ensure the proper working order of this equipment prior to the investigation.

  • All EVP recordings will be announced when the recorder is started. (Note: these recordings are not in any way seyonces or any other summoning ritual, they are meerly a question to any existing presence)

  • Investigator voices shold be kept at a low audible tone, absolutely no whispering.

  • questions should be asked in a clear voice and should never be lengthy, the questioning investigator and surrounding investigators should remain silent immediately after asking a question and allow a sufficiant answering time to pass before asking the next question.

  • Questions are to be kept in a serious manner, no jokes, derogatory comments, ordering or commanding questions will be tolerated.

  • Keep walking to a minimum during record times floor boards and footsteps could be misinterpreted during later analysis.

  • personal questions such as "what is your name?" and "Do you have a favorite color?" are encouraged, Clients are encouraged to provide information on a alleged spirit (IE. who that person was <if known>, the activities of that spirit, etc.)

  • All recordings shall be closed with an announcement that the recorder has stopped and a gesture of gratitude to our spiritual guests, remember to have respect for those whom have passed on.

  • EVP recordings can be sufficiant evidence to prove activity in a location, though are widely skepticized due to the possible fallable nature of the persons responsible for recording said evidence. On request the Original unaltered recording will be presented to the client for review at their own leisure.
